Definition of Term

  • A mounting point on the top of some cameras to attach a more powerful external flash unit or other accessory.

Study Guide Resources

How it works:
  • When the camera shutter is triggered, the contacts on the hot shoe short out thus acting as a switch to fire the external flash device. Some advanced flash units can also communicate back to the camera information about power settings so the camera can adjust the exposure accordingly.

  • ADVANTAGES:
    • External flash units can provide much more powerful flash which will light up larger areas than a built-in flash.
    • External flash units can be positioned to provide bounced lighting (i.e. off the ceiling) which becomes a huge light box to soften and make the lighting more natural.
