A021 PERSISTENCE OF VISION

  • THAUMATROPE: an optical toy made up of a disk with a single image on each side, in which the image appears to combine when spinning. 
  • PHENAKISTOSCOPE: an early animation device made from a spinning disc attached to a handle, with a series of drawings showing frames of an animation 

  • ZOETROPE: a device that produces the illusion of motion from a rapid succession of static pictures inside a spinning cylinder with vertical slits. 

  • FLIPBOOK: 

  • PRAXINOSCOPE: an animation device, using a strip of pictures around the inner surface of a spinning cylinder and an inner circle of mirrors reflecting the pictures as the wheel is turned. 

  • LOOPING ANIMATION: an animation that begins and ends on the same frame. 

  • PERSISTENCE OF VISION: in a movie projector the wheel like part that rotates just far enough to pull the film down one frame, pauses and then rotates again. 

  • FRAME RATE: The number of individual frames recorded every second of video.
