  • REMBRANDT: portrait lighting pattern with an illuminated triangle under the eye on the less illuminated side of the face
  • SPLIT LIGHTING: portrait lighting pattern with half of the subject's face lit, while the other half is left dark

  • BUTTERFLY (PARAMOUNT): portrait lighting pattern with a butterfly shaped shadow under the nose

  • LOOP: portrait lighting pattern with a nose shadow that loops down at an angle onto the cheek

  • BROAD: portrait lighting style with the side of the face toward the camera in the light

  • SHORT: portrait lighting style with the side of the face toward the camera in more shadow

  • CATCHLIGHT: a bright reflection in the eyes of the subject in a portrait

  • LIGHTING RATIO: the comparison of the brightness of the key light to the fill light falling on the subject which determines the contrast

  • HIGH KEY: an image that uses very bright lighting with minimal shadows used to suggest an upbeat, light and airy mood

  • LOW KEY: an image that uses predominantly dark tones and colors which conveys dramatic or mysterious atmosphere and mood
